Cosmetic Dermatology

Recent years have brought a whole new era of Aesthetic Medicine, with the focus now shifted toward what can be accomplished at the Dermatologist’s office (and the dietitian’s, and the acupuncturist’s) as opposed to the plastic surgeon’s. In fact, Dermatology has become one of medicine’s most rapidly evolving specialties—and also the most sought after residency for young medical students. This new ‘hot specialty’ status is partly due to big advances in the science of anti-aging. Meanwhile, the Baby Boomers, who showed signs of being more total-health conscious than the previous, three-martini lunch generation some years ago, have now come of age, or of a ‘certain age.’ They want to maintain their youthful good looks and reverse the beginning signs of aging, but are wary of the traditional option of plastic surgery with its medical and aesthetic risks. Their timing is perfect: anti-aging, once mainly the purview of surgeons, has shifted toward the minimally invasive. Beginning with the boom created by FDA approval of Botox for smoothing lines and wrinkles, and then long-lasting collagen replacement substances to correct sags and folds, these developments include lightening-like progress in laser and light-based technology for toning, tightening and correcting photo-damaged skin. And, with the advent of the tumescent technique, Liposuction for reshaping the body has become much safer and more effective. The new Cosmetic Dermatology treatments, alone or in combination, can reverse the signs of aging in a subtle, pleasing way that does not appear plastic or overdone, and as an added bonus, they are relatively inexpensive and require little to no recovery time. Please refer to nydermatologygroup.com to read details about the amazing youth factors of The Titan (laser skin tightening), Restylane (sag and fold filler), Laser Toning and NYDG's signature treatments for both men and women.

Medical Dermatology

The dermatologist, who specializes in the body’s largest and most visible organ, the skin, has always had an eye to both health and appearance. In many ways, the appearance of the skin is the health of the skin and is often an indicator of the health of the body as well. To the dermatologist, health and appearance are always interconnected. It’s a visual specialty; many of the conditions that indicate the skin needs medical attention can be seen on its surface---as distressing to the patient as it is urgent to the doctor, who may deal with the condition with any number of surgical, reconstructive, cosmetic and non-surgical methods, including laser or chemical or excisional surgery.

Dermatologists have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, melanomas, moles, and other tumors, contact dermatitis and other allergic and non-allergic disorders, and in the recognition of the skin manifestations of systemic and infectious diseases. The dermatologist, who specializes in hair and nails as well as skin, has training in the aesthetic effects of many medical conditions, which may include hair loss, scars from conditions such as acne, or the results of sun damage and aging. Some of these conditions occupy a gray area- is aging a cosmetic problem or more like a cellular breakdown and thus closer to the category considered illness? The point is, at what point does the medical end and the cosmetic begin? And, does it matter? Clearly, erasing acne scars, or rejuvenating aging skin with laser therapy, while at the same time reducing the risk of certain cancers, are treatments with sizeable medical and cosmetic benefits - looking good promotes feeling good, and today there are many ways to do both, with the help of great advances in dermatological science.

New York Dermatology Group’s Signature Treatments:
Where the Medical Meets the Cosmetic

The Triad Medical Facial
This signature treatment developed by Dr. David Colbert has been frequently praised for its beauty and health benefits in national fashion science and beauty science magazines. The Triad is a medical 'facial' designed to instantly make the skin appear radiant while acting long-term to prevent cancer and keep skin healthy beneath the surface. A favorite of actresses, brides-to-be and anyone preparing to face a camera or a big night out, we define The Triad as an advanced beauty treatment with beneficial medical ‘side-effects.’ The relaxing forty-minute procedure progresses through three steps to restore the health and beauty of your skin:

  • Microdermabrasion - Organic crystals gently remove the top micro-layer on the skin surface for toning and firming and reveals fresh new skin
  • Laser Toning - Energizes the skin, stimulates cellular structure and promotes collagen production
  • Fruit Acid Peel - A mild finishing peel imparts a healthy young glowand reveals fresh new skin

This unique treatment purifies, firms and protects facial skin for both men and women. Also treats the skin of hands and décolleté.

The Fifteen-Minute Facelift
As recently noted by Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Show, modern dermatology can negate the need for invasive cosmetic surgery, allowing patients to forego the risk, recovery time, fear and expense associated with the OR and to achieve a beautiful, natural result—all with a quick visit to the dermatologist. Dr. David Colbert performs what he wryly calls The Fifteen Minute Facelift, a procedure designed to replace lost collagen as well as subtly lift the chin, cheeks and forehead. With a combination of Restylane (to fill marionette lines, sunken cheeks and nasolabial folds) and Botox (to smooth wrinkles and lift muscles), the treatment transforms the worn look associated with aging--by plumping, not pulling, the skin. The effect is to restore the youthful beauty of facial contour and skin smoothness in a way that appears entirely natural.

What to expect: The Fifteen Minute Facelift has little to no downtime, though minimal temporary bruising at injection sites may occur. Any pain from needles can be managed by topical anesthetic or nerve blocking via injection. Depending on materials used, The Fifteen Minute Facelift result can last as long as two years, though intermittent touch-ups may be required to maintain effect.

And if you have more than Fifteen Minutes: By optimizing available methods and substances, by recommending the appropriate laser treatments, supplementing these with Collagen Replacement and cosmeceuticals, plus advising the patient on stress reduction and nutrition, we are able to give patients the anti-aging results they desire without the anxiety and risk associated with plastic surgery. Treatment may include, singly or in combination, one time only or ongoing: Botox Cosmetic, Restylane, Sculptra, Laser Toning, GentleWaves, Acupuncture, Chemical Peeling.

The Pedicure Triad
This combo therapeutic and cosmetic procedure developed by and available exclusively at New York Dermatology Group treats the often-neglected skin of the foot. Beginning with Laser Toning, it includes Microdermabrasion for skin renewal, then two chemical peels in two different strengths, one for calluses and cracks on the balls and heels of the foot, another to exfoliate the more sensitive skin on the top. The treatment is then finished with a luxurious rub of vitamin-rich nutrients. A Pedicure Triad is an excellent way for a man or woman to start (or end) the summer or a tropical trip, when the foot is either going to be exposed to the eye (on the beach, in sandals) or has been exposed to a season of sun (brown spots and wrinkles).

The Pedicure Triad:

  • Microdermabrasion - Exfoliates dead skin
  • Laser Toning - Stimulates collagen production and improves skin tone
  • Chemical Peels - In appropriate strengths for different areas of the foot start a sloughing process that continues over weeks
  • Vitamin-rich nutrients ultra-hydrate and nurture
